My Old “Studio”

I was looking for something in the archives when I came across a few photos of my old “studio”. This was from back in 2016, around the time I was starting Draw Paint Academy.

I lived with my brother in a two-bedroom apartment. I had to paint in my room with the easel set up next to the bed and sheets covering the carpet. At night, I slept amongst all the fumes from the oil paints and solvents (not recommended).

My bathroom was where I stored the finished paintings, as the landlord didn’t want us hanging anything on the walls.

I painted before and after work as an accountant, and on weekends. It was challenging but it was what I needed to do at the time.

I enjoyed painting back then just as much as I do now, even though I have more time and space. There’s something to be said of trying to do more with less. It’s a fun challenge on its own.

I’m sharing this because we often get emails from students who are stressing over getting the perfect studio setup before they get to work. But you really don’t need much to get started. And in the early days, you’ll probably need to hack some solution together for yourself. It will never be perfect.

Also, we will be closing enrollment to the 30-Day Creativity Kickstart tomorrow so I can make updates. So if you wanted to join, now’s the time.

Happy painting!

Dan Scott
