7 of the Best Oil Painting Demonstration Videos on YouTube

Here are 7 of the best oil painting demonstration videos on Youtube. We are lucky at the moment to have so much art education readily available to us.

We now have almost direct access to some of the top artists from around the world. Some of these artists have spent thousands of hours perfecting their craft and attended top art schools.

There is so much to learn from these artists, especially if you do not have the opportunity to go to a top art school yourself.

Watch these artists and try and see what techniques you can ‘steal’. So let’s get into 7 of the best oil painting videos on Youtube (there are many more, but these are videos I found particularly useful):

1. Emerald Bay by Vladimir Volegov

I am a huge fan of Vladimir Volegov. He is an extremely talented oil painter who specializes in romantic female portraits. He skillfully uses a high level of detail in his portraits contrast against a more impressionist background to focus the viewer on the subject.

2. Oil Landscape Painting Demonstration (Artist Unknown)

Unfortunately, the artist was not disclosed in this video. However, whoever it is, he has an amazing oil painting technique. He paints with beautiful confidence and boldness which you rarely see.

3. Winter Light, Plein Air Oil Painting by Andy Dolphin

This is a beautiful plein air demonstration by Andy Dolphin. He provides some insightful commentary throughout the video of his process.

For those of you interested in plein air painting or simply trying to loosen up your painting style, this video is a worthwhile watch.

4. Landscape Painting a Day by Peter Fiore

This is one of the few videos by Peter Fiore which I could find on Youtube. I love his style and beautiful landscape paintings. This is a great 10- minute oil painting demonstration.

5. Seascape Demonstration in Oils by Roos Schuring

Roos Schuring is a leading plein air painter and a master of painting impressionist landscape scenes.

6. Workshop by Jeff Watts

Jeff Watts is a brilliant artist and teacher. He is the founder of the Watts Atelier.

This is a casual but extremely insightful oil painting demonstration by Jeff Watts. It goes for over 3 hours and there is nothing cut out, so you may need to skip some of it.

7. Demonstration by Bato Dugarzhapov

Bato Dugarzhapov is one of my favorite living artists. He was a remarkable ability to distill the subject down to the bare essence and nothing more. Here's a demonstration of him painting an interior scene.

  1. I think it’s a lot more useful and instructive to see the subject/model/reference-photo the painter is working from so you can see how they approach rendering that particular problem.

  2. “Simplify drawing and painting” is by far and I really mean by far the best, most concise, easy to follow and useful to all levels of oil painter.
I’ve watched many of the others but none explain in clear detail like Alex. The others seem very much to be on an ego trip compared to simplify tbh.

  3. As a fellow artist, I completely agree with your recommendation of those oil painting demonstration videos on YouTube! I recently came across a video by Rich Diaz and was blown away by his beautiful and intricate brushwork. It’s amazing how he can create such detailed and realistic paintings with such ease. I’m definitely going to check out the other videos you recommended and learn from these talented artists. Thank you for the post!
