When Things Start to Click

Someone emailed in saying how they have been struggling with many of the concepts that we discuss in our articles and courses, but lately a few things have started to just click out of nowhere.

That’s how it goes! Progress will feel frustratingly slow until something just clicks and you begin to understand what’s going on. This is especially true for complex areas like drawing, color, and light. It’s almost like you must sit with these concepts for a while before you can truly comprehend them.

Because of this, progress in art can feel more like steps rather than a smooth upward trend. And the more experienced you get, the wider the steps become and the more patient you need to be.

I can see it in my work. My progress is not visible from painting to painting. But if I take a step back, I can see distinct points when my work levels up a notch.

So, stick with it. Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you aren’t making progress. The next step up may be just around the corner!

Kind regards

Dan Scott

PS. Below is a little painting I’ve been working on. A subtle, misty landscape. It’s nearly done; I just need to make a few finishing touches. I’ll have a few lessons learned for you shortly.
