Plein Air Painting in the Maleny Hinterlands

Last month I did a two-night solo painting trip in Maleny, Queensland. I only managed to complete one study, as I also wanted to catch up on some writing. You can see it below, along with a few other photos of the painting process.

Painting this was quite the experience!

It started raining halfway through. I had to hold an umbrella in my right hand and juggle my brushes in my left.

Every now and then, I was hit with gusts of wind that threatened to bowl my easel over, and each time I had to grab what I could and brace for impact.

I was painting on a slope while sitting on a rock. To keep my easel stand upright, I had to hold it in place with both feet, and remember not to move them.

And if that wasn’t enough, I had a few curious goats and sheep visit me. VERY curious. They started inspecting and even nibbling my clothes and equipment. It wasn’t long before I had to concede and retreat to the cabin to make the finishing touches.

This is what it’s all about! The experience of creating and being amongst the raw elements. It makes you feel alive.

Painting is much more than just the outcome. A good finished painting is nice, but the joy of creating it, that is what it’s all about.

I’m enjoying plein air painting so much that it’s making studio painting feel a bit dull. But it’s hard to beat the control and reliability of painting in the studio, so it’s here to stay.

Also, we are doing a brief promotion on Composition Breakdown. For the next week or so, you can join at a reduced price and receive several bonuses.

PS. I also managed to get some footage of the painting process. It doesn’t give you a great view of the painting, but it captures the ambiance well.
