Earlier this week, I wrote about Susan Ryder, a remarkable interior artist. In doing my research, I came across another interesting artist, Bernard Dunstan. He was one of Ryder’s early teachers.
I have since been down a few rabbit holes relating to his life and work. I wanted to share my findings while I remember.
He lived a true artist life. In 1949, he married fellow artist Diana Armfield RA. For some 50 years, Dunstan did a nude sketch of his wife every morning. Not surprising for someone whose artist statement is: “Paint what you love, love what you paint.” It also explains why nudes make up so much of his portfolio.
This video is a pleasant watch. Diana talks about her life as an artist and her relationship with Bernard (Bernard is shown quietly painting).
This is one of his typical paintings. Look at those rich colors and how it all somewhat melts together. It reminds me a bit of Nicolai Fechin.
Diana’s work is equally stunning. I’d say I prefer it, but I’m biased towards cheery landscapes! You can see a few of my favorites here:
Thanks for reading! If you want to learn more, you should check out my Painting Academy course. I’ll walk you through the time-tested fundamentals of painting. It’s perfect for absolute beginner to intermediate painters.
