Jeremy Mann’s Plein Air Books

Jeremy Mann Plein Air Books (16)

A few years ago, I purchased two books by Jeremy Mann titled Mann Volume 1.3 and Mann Volume 2.3. They document Mann’s plein air studies and travels. In his own words:

“The following pages contain a duplicate of the book of plein airs I’ve carried for the past three years. Oil on non archival paper (the point wasn’t to make paintings); several panels which hang on my walls, the size of the custom cigar box they were painted within; followed by a few films and photos from the travels which give them life.”

In a world where businesses are all aiming to make everything faster and cheaper and more convenient, these books provide a breath of fresh air. They are beautifully put together and provide a raw and honest look into Mann’s work and life. There’s a sense of artistry to them, just like his drawings and paintings. It’s good to see, as I think there should always be a place for quality work done with care and passion.

The following are a few snapshots from the books. Take note of the subtle color variations and the sense of spontaneity and freshness. Wonderful stuff. These are just a few of the hundreds featured in the books.

I’ll leave you with the opening words from Volume 2.3:

“This s— ain’t easy. But damn, I love it. It may be one of my absolute most favorite things to spend my time enraptured with because it incorporates everything I love about life, culminating in one enduring little painting, all for myself. Travelling, nature, painting, and awareness of living all wrapped up into a single experience which is always exalting whether in inclement weathers or the most perfect of days, days which will remain forever ingrained within my memory and always a part of who I am not only as an artist, but as a person meandering through this vast and fascinating world.”

That passion is infectious, isn’t it? Keep in mind, I have no affiliation with Mann; I’m just a fan. I encourage you to explore his work further on his website. You can also pick up copies of his books there.

Happy painting!
