One of the challenges of art is the constant need to find new subjects and to fuel your creativity and inspiration. As soon as they dry up, nothing else matters as an artist.
To help you out, I put together the following art prompt list. The idea behind this list is to get you thinking and to spark ideas, rather than to point you directly at your next subject.
Are there any hidden gems in nature close by? (Hidden trails, streams, gardens, etc.) I find that the best subjects are often in hard-to-reach places.
What is the highest mountain near you? Could you paint it from a distance?
Where are the best spots to view sunrise and sunset?
What is the nearest river, lake, or stream?
What is the most iconic tree near you?
Who is the most iconic person in your life? Can you paint them in a way that pushes their character and nature?
What significant events or trips have you made lately? Could you capture these in a painting?
Are there any overlooked subjects in your home or backyard?
Can you paint an ordinary subject in an interesting way?
Can you paint a complex subject in a simple way?
Can you paint a subject in the style of your favourite artist?
Can you paint an open sky with more than just blue?
Can you paint a white object in shadow?
Can you paint a black object in light?
Can you mix painting with another hobby? For example, sometimes I paint whilst kayak fishing.
Can you revisit a familiar subject? This is particularly suitable for seasonal subjects.
Can you zoom in on your surroundings? Can you zoom out?
Can you convey something vast in number without getting caught up in the tiny details? (Trees, leaves, grass, rocks, pebbles, etc.)
