Art Price Calculator

This calculator will help you determine the price of your artwork using a price per square inch methodology. I find this to be the simplest and most consistent pricing methodology.

Instructions

  1. Enter the dimensions of your artwork in inches.
  2. Enter a price per square inch. The default is $1. See below for more details on this figure.
  3. The output is the calculated price for the artwork in your preferred currency.

What is an appropriate price per square inch?

The price per square inch needs to cover your time, materials and supplies, travel, studio costs, and desired profit. It also needs to take into consideration the art market. If your price per square inch is too high, your artwork won’t sell. If it’s too low, you won’t make any profit.

The simplest way to come up with an appropriate price per square inch is to go as high as the market allows. I personally use a price per square inch of $2. This covers my costs but does not price me out of the market. You should play around with the calculator until you come up with an appropriate price per square inch.

Once you have determined an appropriate price per square inch, you can use this figure across all artwork dimensions. This gives you a consistent and simple pricing strategy. When you want to increase your prices across the board, you can simply increase your price per square inch.

You could also use the price per square inch to place a premium on larger artworks. For example, you could have a price per square inch of $0.5 for small artworks and $2 for large artworks.
