Exploring the Masters – Episode 3

Here’s episode 3 of my Exploring the Masters series.

Erin Hanson

A wonderful impressionist painter (or “Open Impressionism” as she calls it). She gets a mention not only for her work but also for her business savvy. It’s nice to see a skilled painter doing well!

You can see her work here. I get a feel of Edgar Payne mixed with Vincent van Gogh. Distinct shapes and vibrant colors.

Her F.A.Q and this interview are worth reading. Some wise words in there for aspiring artists, particularly in relation to the business side of art. Here are some extracts:

On her overall strategy, "My strategy is simple - do regular outreach with newsletters and posts, always be honest and real, keep it current, keep people engaged, and engage them back. It's a part of the artist's job that I really enjoy.”

On finding inspiration, "The first step to creating a painting is getting the inspiration. Several times every year I put down the brush and go out by myself into the wilderness to hike and explore.”

Advice to aspiring artists, "Create your art every day, no matter what else is going on in your life. Keep going, keep persisting, and keep sharing your work with others. The more you produce, the better you will get. The more you share your work, the more you will become known.”
